NASW-MS Chapter Rejects Violence on a Mississippi Synagogue

The National Association of Social Workers – Mississippi Chapter (NASW-MS) opposes the recent violence against Beth Israel Congregation, and we join with the Mayor John Horhn and the City of Jackson, local organizations, and the congregation leaders to issue a statement against religious hatred and violence in all communities. We stand in solidarity and collective voices that this type of violence will not be tolerated. NASW-MS Chapter will challenge injustice and degradation, including violence and hatred. As professional social workers, we are committed to respecting the dignity of everyone.

NASW-MS affirms that all people have the right to worship, live, and be respected in their religious setting. Antisemitism and violence are unacceptable, and we are opposed to any form of unlawful use of violence that infringes upon the communities we serve. To the families, friends, and worshippers of Beth Israel, we decry yet another repeated instance of hatred on your safe space of worship. Your service and presence have been open to all people whenever services were needed. For one to target your synagogue, it is distressing to experience the pain of hatred and violence to intimidate people. We must all join in arms, advocate, and speak up and out now!

In conclusion, this tragic act of violence against Beth Israel Congregation serves as a painful reminder of the enduring consequences of religious hatred and the urgent need for collective action. By taking a clear and public stand, NASW-MS proclaim that silence is not an option in the face of injustice. We believe NASW-Mississippi Chapter’s role is critically important in advocating antisemitism and all forms of hatred, reinforcing dignity, justice, and human rights.
